Do Kwon Considers Guilty Plea in $40B Terra Collapse Case
Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon may reverse his not-guilty plea in the U.S. Department of Justice's case regarding the 2022 collapse of Terra's algorithmic stablecoin UST, according to a Monday court filing. Judge Paul Engelmayer's order notes Kwon "may enter a change of plea" and requires him to prepare a detailed allocution addressing each charge.
The development follows Kwon's January plea of not guilty to eight counts including securities fraud, wire fraud, and market manipulation. The implosion of Terra's ecosystem in May 2022 erased nearly $40 billion in market value, triggering a crypto winter that saw Bitcoin and ethereum plummet over 70% from their peaks.
Prosecutors allege Kwon misled investors about UST's stability mechanisms while secretly orchestrating transactions to artificially prop up the token. The case has become a bellwether for regulatory scrutiny of algorithmic stablecoins, with the SEC separately pursuing civil charges against Terraform Labs.
